Semester Break

with 4 comments

This is the last semester for me on the trail of a SCU Media Degree and short/long 3.5 years depending on my point of view. It is and has been a most enjoyable enlivening uplifting cuturally rewarding life changing experience and for that I wish to thank my daughter seen in a previous post with her hair selected in great detail thanks to the new edge selection tools in CS5.

Enrolling at SCU was Roses idea and one I took up . Most likely there were some myself included who could not see the end of the tunnel but I can remember getting to a point of the journey at which time I had lost site of the beginning that is an indication to me of how far I had come.

The following images are of some of my most cherished memories and in particular was the event of the SCugies 2009 an end of year awards night with a light hearted note to it. I remember getting an award for the best tattoos and ended up taking some digital shots of the dignitaries at the request of head of school and later was to branch out into freelance photo  journalism for the Nimbin Goodtimes having regular work accepted by the editor Bob. On the night in question I was proud to have the company of my youngest son Eli who likes a beer or two and was good company on the night.

It was with faltering steps the journey was begun and it almost collapsed before it was even off the ground in that fateful first semester . I was suffering with vision impairment due to what was diagnosed correctly as advanced cataracts. I was a virtual Mr. Magoo and what I had thought was God’s way of being kind to me was in fact a severe handicap .

I bit the bullet and had the implants a major miracle happened sight for the blind. From there my list of units on the board has grown and my thanks also go to my surgeon and to the wonderful staff of Lecturers at SCU. In particular I want to thank one remarkable Lecturer (name supplied} that approached me in the square over the break at the end of 2007 .

I had sent emails to all my lecturers saying I was giving up and it did not feel good at all . She encouraged me and with this shove I completed indigenous ways of cultural expression and Creative writing over the break and 2008 semester one saw the rebirth of my university life. The gift of academia was not what I expected and it never could be how could it be it was beyond my imagination beyond the borders of my self constructed  cultural world.

In particular I want to thank the SASS and all associated teaching staff for a most enjoyable journey . In particular I would like to share my reflections on the feedback from members in the media production unit and how I found it extremely valuable and even more so when viewed through the lens of critical and often not constructive criticism posed by members of the media world aiming to cut the tall poppy by what ever means is available. Once again I am indebted for this opportunity to swim in a protected pool and to realise the realities of competition in the real world.  I will never forget your help and I am sure you will remember my continual presence in the arts booking room doorway. Thanks to you Ian and Andrew and to you Troy . All these images are able to be view in high resolution simply click on an image to enlarge.

    • Hi Brad,

thanks for reading my blog . I feel it is an area I want to develop for myself as well as anyone who reads it.

Sort of a time line and knowing how the net is, possibly one of the most enduring areas of modern life, these posts will be something for us to recall and remember the good times we had . I am very happy for you on your passing all units and look forward to your graduation and it’s great that we finished well nearly together.

Like school days university days and the friends we have made will always be in a special category . I would define that catagory by the interaction created . Learning happens in collaboration and by that I mean that you and I could not have come this far without the support of each other and the Lecturers in this World of critical thinking and the manufacture of intellectual property . This is a gift that is not tangible and will not tarnish with age,not able to be easily bought sold or stolen. Nothing is as interesting or as fullfilling than roaming in the far corners of your own mind in the company of like minded souls. Have a nice day I am it’s fully sunshine out here

      Cheers

      Andrew
